Why Hydraulic down pressure instead of air?

If you follow this blog, you probably remember reading a while back that Ag Leader announced the ability to tie into the Dawn Equipment Rfx hydraulic downforce control system.  The big question is, why does that matter?

There are several reasons why this system reigns superior to air bags for down force, and I will cover some of them.

It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words, so a video would be even better yet!  I had the opportunity last week at a farm show to see this system work in Dawn Equipment’s booth, so I thought I would share it here.

Notice how fast the system is capable of reacting when commanded by turning the knob in the top left corner of the video.

So back to the original question, why is this important?

This system, when compared to inflating and deflating an airbag, is drastically faster.  That allows us to rapidly change the down force of the planter on the go, and will prevent us from having too much down force, or even worse, not enough down force and planting too shallow.

A common problem with other systems on the market today is that when they change from a soft spot in the field to harder soils and need more down pressure, you travel quite a distance before the system adjusts to the correct setting, leaving your down pressure too light, and preventing you from planting the corn at your desired depth.

I know we are still a little ways from having this system tied fully into the Ag Leader Integra display, but this is a great new product that I am very excited about!
